Top Tips for buying Graphic Cards

We all want a bargin but you know the saying "If it looks to good to be true then it probably isn't".
These are such wise words. Here's our top tips and things to look at when your considering a new graphics card.

  • What do I want it do for me?
    Run office, Edit photos,
    Playing Games,
    Play Hot Games,
    Video Production, CAD etc.
Pretty much the price goes higher from left to right.
  • All graphic cards and onboard graphics will run office & allow photo editing.
professional editors will of course move up a couple notches due to running packages like Adobe Photoshop.
  • At this point it becomes a question of how much you want to spend. Here's our price chart
    - Playing Basic games.e.g. Sims. £50 to £75
    - Hot Games. E.g. Call of Duty, Wolfenstein. £75 to £140
    - Hot Games at competitive level & full glory. £150 to £250
  • What makes a card £140 as opposed to £75?
Really mega important to understand this if your looking for the balance of price & performance. Read Carefully. Clearly for the petrol heads the feature set is important but for simple purchasing here's our take.
1 - The Core Clock rate. Major Performance driver. Faster Clocks higher price.
2 - Memory Clock rate. Major Performance driver. Faster Clocks higher price.
3 - Memory. This does have a major effect on the visual performance.
4 - Cooling. Quality of the Heatsinks & Fans. Some models have improved cooling.
5 - The Processor feature. Professional cards have a much more enhanced core specifically designed for these higher end applications.
